Van de Velde didn’t get to play at last year's Open at Carnoustie because of a virus, but this year he managed to qualify with a birdie at the last, and he said: "I qualified in 1999, so maybe this is my chance."
Van de Velde is likely to go down in golfing history so far for his last-hole triple-bogey seven at Carnoustie in 1999.
He had another chance this time around after his ball was found in the rough ground on the 17th.
Van de Velde finished on three under par, tied for second place with amateur players Chris Woods of Bristol and Rohan Blizard of Australia.
