French golfer Jean van de Velde gets through to Open
French golf star Jean van de Velde has become one of 12 golfers to qualify for this year's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

42-year-old Van de Velde, who had missed a chane at the Open at Carnoustie in 1999, came in second place with former Walker Cup golf player Jamie Elson at Hillside.

Jean van de VeldeVan de Velde didn’t get to play at last year's Open at Carnoustie because of a virus, but this year he managed to qualify with a birdie at the last, and he said: "I qualified in 1999, so maybe this is my chance."

Van de Velde is likely to go down in golfing history so far for his last-hole triple-bogey seven at Carnoustie in 1999.

He had another chance this time around after his ball was found in the rough ground on the 17th.

Van de Velde finished on three under par, tied for second place with amateur players Chris Woods of Bristol and Rohan Blizard of Australia.
