Prince Naseem Hamed's a boxing champion with a difference

PrinceNaseemPrince Naseem Hamed's exceptional boxing skills have been obvious from the start and at just 26 he became one of the highest earning sportsmen in the whole world. Now aged 31, Prince Naseem Hamed is still one of the world's most famous and flamboyant boxers.

Prince Naseem Hamed, born of Yemeni ancestry, was just seven when he started boxing at Brendan Ingle's gymnasium, and full of confidence, aged only twelve, he told Harry Mullan the editor of Boxing News, "You ought to write a story about me, I am going to be a World Champion." Just like Mohammed Ali, Prince Naseem Hamed has not been afraid to tell the world he is the champ.

But Prince Naseem Hamed shares something else with Mohammed Ali because he is also a Muslim. Like Mohammed Ali Prince Naseem Hamed is known for more than just his expertise in the boxing ring.

Prince Naseem Hamed is more than just a boxer; he is an entertainer as well. With music and dancing, his trademark leopard print shorts and his legendary entrances, not forgetting his infamous 'flip' into the ring, have all ensured Prince Naseem Hamed became a youth icon. Sir Bob Geldof once told a local paper that, "Prince Naseem is one of the greatest showmen in the world."

Prince Naseem Hamed also has the support of other internationally famous celebrities including Puff Daddy, Will Smith, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Jackson, Wesley Snipes, Robbie Williams, David Beckham, Ian Wright and Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis.  His popularity and fan club attracts members of all ages from all around the world.

Prince Naseem Hamed has been invited to Buckingham Palace to meet with the Royal Family and to 10 Downing Street at the invitation of the Prime Minister. But Prince Naseem Hamed is more than just a British boxer he is an Arabic fighter who prides himself on his cultural roots from both nations.

But now let's look at some of the highlights of his astonishing career: in February 1997 Prince Naseem Hamed took on American boxer Tom Johnson for the IBF title. He won and became the two time champion of the world but this was not to last.  Prince Naseem Hamed was stripped of his IBF belt due to boxing politics.

However, 1997 saw Prince Naseem Hamed enter a new era when a record-breaking deal was signed with major American channel Home Box Office (HBO) and firmly launched Prince Naseem Hamed in America. Prince Naseem Hamed's first American fight took place on 19th December 1997 when he took on native New Yorker, Kevin Kelley at the boxing Mecca of the world Madison Square Garden.

Prince Naseem Hamed was victorious in four rounds and gave what was hailed as one of the most exciting fights of his career.

Then January 1999 was a very busy month for Prince Naseem Hamed who added yet another title to his collection when he received an MBE in the Queen's New Year's Honour List.

October 1999 saw Prince Naseem Hamed fight Mexican Cesar Soto for the WBC title. To get ready for the fight, Prince Naseem Hamed headed to the Poconos Mountains for a six-week, intensive training camp.

Prince Naseem Hamed shared the camp with Lennox Lewis who was preparing for his Holyfield re-match. This was the first time Prince Naseem Hamed had been to a training camp and the difference was obvious.

After twelve gruelling rounds Prince Naseem Hamed won on a unanimous points decision becoming the WBO & WBC featherweight champion of the world. However, again due to boxing politics Prince Naseem Hamed had to resign the WBC title in January 2000.

September 2000 marked Prince Naseem Hamed's five-year reign as the WBO Featherweight Champion. Five days after his anniversary party, Prince Naseem Hamed decided to give up the title and stated that he would no longer allow boxing politics to get in the way of him fighting the world's top boxers.
Although boxing politics unfortunately seems to have got in the way of Prince Naseem Hamed's dream to unify the featherweight division, his victories over the WBO, IBF, WBA and WBC titleholders made him featherweight champion of the world.

However, Prince Naseem Hamed was beaten by Marco Antonio Barrera in Las Vegas in 2001, his first defeat in 37 fights and his success in the ring took a step downhill. Prince Naseem Hamed last fought in May 2002, when he was booed after a shaky points decision over Spain's Manuel Calvo.

You can't keep a good fighter down though, and Prince Naseem Hamed who has shown he is one of the best is back in the news and plans to stage his comeback. "In the New Year you could witness something special," Prince Naseem Hamed recently said.
