EU agriculture ministers set new pesticide controls
EU agriculture ministers have been setting much tighter controls on the use of pesticides, following two years of discussions on the subject.

The stricter controls would make farmers give up using substances found to be poisonous to humans.

Hilary BennCancer-causing chemicals and any known to be harmful to human hormones or reproduction would be included in the list of banned substances.

Hungary, the Irish Republic, Romania and the UK, however, all abstained from voting in support of the idea.

British Environment Secretary Hilary Benn called for more scientific research before anything more is done, but Slovenian Agriculture Minister, Iztok Jarc approved the new controls.

Many Euro MPs want even stricter controls on pesticides so the proposals may be amended further by the European parliament in the autumn.

Environmental consultancy ADAS claim that yields of important crops such as potatoes and wheat could fall by as much as a quarter under the newly proposed EU pesticide controls.
