France football captain Patrick Vieira must recover fast
France’s football captain Patrick Vieira has decided if he is not fully recovered by the end of the week then he is out of the Euro 2008 opening game and possibly the following matches.

Vieira, 31, who plays for Inter Milan, injured his left thigh last Friday and will be sidelined for the opening Group C game against Romania in Zurich on Monday if he doesn’t make a speedy recovery.

Patrick VieiraPatrick Vieira is reported to have explained: "If by the end of the week I am not training with the squad that would mean I will not be participating in the Euros."

However, Mathieu Flamini, 24, who has already agreed a deal to join AC Milan from current team Arsenal on July 1, has been called upon to act as Vieira’s cover if needs be.

Patrick Vieira is nevertheless feeling optimistic, and thinks he still has a good chance of making the final two group games if only he can recover quickly enough.
