Afterwards Roger Federer, who is currently world number one, admitted: "I couldn't serve it out the way I wanted to in the first and second sets, but I felt OK out there. But it was tough conditions with the rain delay. I didn't think I had my best serving day today unfortunately."
But it wasn’t all bad luck for the home players because French favourite Gael Monfils delighted the crowd with a 7-6 4-6 6-3 6-2 victory against Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic to reach the last eight, and he now goes forward tp play Spanish fifth seed David Ferrer.
