The French cabinet is going to consider a proposal to make breathalysers mandatory at nightclubs and late night bars from this summer, and the move comes following a weekend of alcohol-related accidents.

Four people aged between 15 and 26 were killed when a car went off the road in the vicinity of Forbach, in eastern France on the weekend, and ministers and police want to prevent such accidents in future.

BreathalyserWhen the cabinet meets on Monday, ecology and health ministers will be putting forward details for the idea, which if it were passed would apply to all drinking venues that stay open until 0200.

About 350 cafes and bars in western France have already begun field trials, Ecology Minister Jean-Louis Borloo explained.

The minister also said on France 2 television channel where he was speaking: "Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot and I will present a decree to make electronic breathalyser tests obligatory in drinking establishments open until 0200 so that everyone can check their level, their condition upon leaving."
