French mountaineers killed in avalanche in Italian Alps
Five French mountaineers met their deaths in an avalanche disaster in Italy's northwestern Alps and their bodies have been recovered according to reports.

The avalanche struck on Wednesday in the Gran Paradiso National Park, near the French border when the group of climbers was some 2,500m (8,000ft) high up the mountains.

AvalancheThe French guide to the party was rescued from the snow after a helicopter located him on Wednesday night, and he is now receiving treatment in hospital in the town of Aosta.

The five dead mountaineers’ bodies were discovered at the bottom of a gorge, and it is said that the avalanche had dragged them downhill by some 150m (500ft).

Italy's La Repubblica newspaper has reported that the French mountaineering group had departed for the climb across the Alps on Wednesday afternoon.

A terrible storm had occurred after they had left and when the party failed to arrive at a mountain refuge in reasonable time, the manager alerted the authorities.
