Frenchman Michel Fourniret aka Ogre of the Ardennes on trial
Frenchman Michel Fourniret, who is said to be one of France's worst serial killers, has been forced to attend court to stand trial for the murder of seven girls and young women.

Michel Fourniret, 65, who is also known as the "Ogre of the Ardennes", had refused to co-operate in his trial but the prosecutor Francis Nachbar has said Michel Foutniret will be forced to attend the court every day it is in session.

Michel FourniretFrancis Nachbar also told Michel Fourniret: "You will no longer manipulate anyone... I represent society and society will not be subject to your caprices and your moods. Stop this intolerable indecency."

The second day of the trial of Michel Fourniret and his wife, Monique Olivier, 59, who is also charged with being his accomplice in murder and kidnapping, was started with the reading out of the details of the alleged crimes between 1987 and 2003.

Michel Fourniret has confessed to the murders, most of which were committed in the Ardennes region of France and Belgium, and in a letter to the judge he had admitted he was a "bad person devoid of human emotion".

However, Michel Fourniret has played down his wife's role in his crimes by explaining that he beat her and manipulated her into helping him.
