French embassy targeted by Comoran protesters
The French embassy has been the target of large crowds of protesters who have gathered in the Comoran capital, Moroni, where they are demonstrating because of the escape of ousted leader Colonel Mohammed Bacar.

The demonstrators chanted anti-French slogans outside the embassy following Colonel Bacar’s escape to the island of Mayotte, which is run by France.

Cormmoran FlagCol Bacar fled the island of Anjouan in the Comoros after government troops and an African Union force invaded it, and he has appealed to France for political asylum.

However, the Comoran government has asked France for his extradition.

The trouble began when Col Bacar had refused to step down as president of Anjouan, after disputed elections last July.

The Comoros is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, off the eastern coast of Africa and it has four main islands - Grande Comore, Mohéli, Anjouan, and Mayotte - as well as many minor islets.

The island of Mayotte is the only one of the Comoros island group to have chosen to stay under French control when the other islands gained independence in 1975.
