French race from Paris to Nice poses threat to Tour de France
The future of the prestigious Tour de France cycling race is potentially under threat because cycling's governing body the International Cycling Union (UCI) has warned that it will not recognise this year's Paris-Nice race.

This news marks the latest instalment in a long-running dispute between the UCI and the Tour de France organisers.

UCI boss Pat McQuaidThe trouble was sparked because UCI boss Pat McQuaid was annoyed that the organisers decided to manage the race only under French law rather than under the governing body's jurisdiction and he cautioned: "This measure will have far-reaching consequences."

In fact, Pat McQuaid sent a letter on Monday to all cycling teams to explain the row between himself and the UCI and Paris-Nice organisers Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), which also organises the Tour de France.

The Paris-Nice cycling race is the European calendar's first major race of the season but the ongoing dispute is a genuine threat to the Tour de France.

ASO wants to run the race under the jurisdiction of the French Cycling Federation (FFC) and the government of France, but now the UCI is threatening to withdraw anti-doping regulators.

Pat McQuaid has warned that this could affect the Tour if ASO and the FFC do not hold events such as Paris-Nice under its jurisdiction.

The UCI has stated that it will not give any classification to Paris-Nice and nor will it recognise a winner or award points unless the dispute is settled.

The UCI has asked professional cycling teams to boycott the race or threatened them with sanctions as well as putting forward an appeal to the FFC and French Secretary of State for Sport calling on them to think again about supporting ASO.
