France and Africa need new links, President Sarkozy says
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said that he feels that his country needs to renegotiate its defence arrangements with countries in Africa, and also that Europe and Africa both needed to create new ties based on equality and respect between them.

France has military agreements and links with several of its ex-colonies in Africa and recently was giving support to Chad to help the country deal with a rebel attack.

President Nicolas SarkozyNicolas Sarkozy was in South Africa on a visit and he told South Africa's parliament in Cape Town that: "They must reflect Africa as it is today and not as it was yesterday."

President Nicolas Sarkozy also spoke about migration and he likened the situation in Europe with that of South Africa, which is facing a similar problem with migrant people.

Nicolas Sarkozy said as well that he thought that Africa should have at least one permanent seat on the UN Security Council. With that in mind he pointed out that France would no longer accept discussions of important global affairs taking place without a leading African country being involved.
