The gas explosion happened in Cours Lafayette, which is a busy shopping street in the centre of Lyon, and took place around noon.

Gas explosion in FranceBuildings in the vicinity caught fire in the blaze, and according to reports, two of those injured by the blast are in a serious condition.

A gas leak had already been detected an hour before the explosion occurred, and the incident happened during road maintenance that was taking place.
