A London auction of artwork, including work by famous artists Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol, has been staged at Sotheby’s and raised more than £95m, which is claimed to be a record amount in Europe.

A private collector bought Francis Bacon’s 1969 Study of Nude With Figure In A Mirror for nearly £20m, and Three Self Portraits by Andy Warhol were sold for almost £11.5m to an anonymous bidder.

Andy WarholA small portrait thought to be the first picture of Francis Bacon’s last great love, John Edwards, reached nearly £2m as a selling price, and Concetto Spaziale, La Fine Di Dio, by Lucio Fontana is reported to have sold for more than £10m, which was around £6m more than what it was expected to bring.

The sculpture Kiepenkerl by Jeff Koon had been thought as being likely to sell for between £1.5m and £2.5m but actually went for over £3m.

Also included in the items for auction were artworks by Gilbert and George, Bridget Riley and Andreas Gursky.
