France’s parliament approve the Lisbon Treaty
The parliament of France has officially ratified the Lisbon Treaty, becoming the fifth country to approve it and the first of the EU's founder members to have done so.

The French parliament voted to accept the reform treaty last week, nearly three years after a French No vote came as a fatal blow to the European Constitution.

President Nicolas SarkozyFrench President Nicolas Sarkozy said in a speech he made on TV: "thanks to this success... France is back in Europe".

President Nicolas Sarkozy had decided against putting the Lisbon Treaty to a public vote, but this move angered Socialist MPs from the opposition party.

Before the Lisbon Treaty could be formally adopted, the upper and lower houses held a Congress meeting at Versailles at which they deleted a reference in the French constitution to the EU Constitutional Treaty.

France has joined with Hungary, Malta, Slovenia and Romania as the countries to have ratified the Lisbon Treaty so far. However, Ireland is planning to hold a referendum on the matter.
