Prince Andrew made his surprising comments in an interview published by the International Herald Tribune, and it is not usual for one of the Royal Family to comment in public on matters like this.
However, Prince Andrew also said that he thought America should have learned lessons from what happened in British colonial history, and he added that there had been "occasions when people in the UK would wish that those in responsible positions in the US might listen and learn from our experiences".
In support of his argument Prince Andrew said: "We've won some, lost some, drawn some. The fact is there is quite a lot of experience over here which is valid and should be listened to."
Explaining his current viewpoints on such matters, Prince Andrew went on to say that the 1982 Falklands War had changed him "out of all recognition."
