French firm Alstom create Automotrice Grande Vitesse train
French power generation and engineering company Alstom is about to make public a new high-speed train, known as the AGV (Automotrice Grande Vitesse).

The new AVG super-fast train will travel at up to 360km/h (224mph), and will get its speed from engines placed under each carriage.

AlstomAlstom claim the AGV compares with the world's largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380 plane, in terms of how important it is and as a new engineering masterpiece.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be in attendance at the unveiling ceremony for the new train, which is to take place at Alstom's research centre in La Rochelle.

The AGV's new engines are more energy-efficient than the TVG, the train that it takes over from, and the innovative design will provide more passenger space as well as reducing the cost of maintenance, the company has explained.

The AGV achieved a new world rail speed record for a train on conventional rails last April, when it went as fast as 574.8km/h (356mph), it has been reported.
