French President Nicolas Sarkozy & Carla Bruni wed at Paris Elysee

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, 53, and his girlfriend, singer and former model Carla Bruni, 40, have tied the knot and they chose the Elysee Palace in Paris for their wedding ceremony.

Francois Lebel, who married the couple, said on French Europe-1 radio that Carla Bruni wore white and looked "ravishing, as usual" and that the president and his bride were married in the presence of close family and friends.

Mr Lebel added that the occasion was a "historic moment" and he explained it was the first time a French president had married while in office as president.

French radio station RTL had already revealed that Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni were married at the Elysee Palace, which is the president's official residence.

President Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni’s relationship has been the subject of countless news stories for the last several months with speculation over if and when they would be getting married as well as criticism from some sectors that the president should be more concerned with his official business than having his romance publicised so widely.

Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni had gone public with their romance during a trip to Disneyland Paris, and the couple had stayed in the public eye during visits to Egypt and Jordan.

Nicolas Sarkozy and ex-wife, Cecilia, were divorced back in October 2007.
