French ex-President Francois Mitterrand’s items in auctionAn auction is being held of hundreds of items of clothing, gifts and furniture that were once the possessions of former French President Francois Mitterrand, who died in 1996.
Francois Mitterrand was France's longest serving president and he held the job from 1981 until 1995. Francois Mitterrand died from cancer and since his death his widow, Danielle, now aged 83, has kept all his belongings in her Paris flat.
But now Francois Mitterrand’s widow is hoping to raise funds for her human rights charity and so she has put the items up for sale. Items in the auction of Francois Mitterrand’s past belongings include wool designer suits, hats, a dressing gown, a piggy bank and even a crocodile-skin briefcase that was a present from Cuba's Fidel Castro. 368 lots are up for auction on Tuesday - including nearly 100 shirts, around 60 suits, ties, shoes, scarves and a nightgown, it has been reported. Most items have low range price estimates ranging from 20 euros ($30; £15) to 450 euros and this was done so that many French people besides the very wealthy can get a chance at making bids.
