Robin Wright Penn has cited irreconcilable differences as a reason for the couple’s divorce, and publicist, Mara Buxbaum, confirmed the divorce to US celebrity magazine People, although no further information was given.
Sean Penn, 47, and Robin Wright Penn, 41, are seeking joint custody of their two teenage children.
Sean Penn, who was in the past married to pop singer Madonna for four years in the 1980s, has been nominated for a best actor Oscar four times, and won the award in 2004 for Mystic River.
Robin Wright Penn is also a star of the cinema and was in the films Beowulf and Forrest Gump, as well as starring alongside Jack Nicholson in 2001's The Pledge, which was directed by Sean Penn.
