Lebanon hasn’t had a president since November, and rival pro- and anti- Syrian factions have been arguing over this high official vacancy.
Nicolas Sarkozy is reported to have announced: "I ask Syria to... work to create agreement." And he added that his country "will not make any more contacts with Syria... as long as there is no proof of Syria's willingness to let Lebanon choose a consensus president."
France has been trying to get a solution to the argument between the two sides and a compromise candidate - army commander Gen Michel Suleiman – has been put forward.
However, the opposition parties can’t agree on how to share power if Gen Michel Suleiman becomes president.
