Michele Schweitzer, a spokeswoman for Tina Turner, said: "Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today. She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made."
Rock ‘n’ roll and R&B veteran Chuck Berry was about to play when he heard the news and he said in tribute: "What can you have but sorrow if you lose one of your colleagues, you know?"
Ike Turner was a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and is said by many to have made the first rock 'n' roll record, Rocket 88, in 1951.
Ike Turner was also well known for his work as a session guitarist and pianist.
