Amelie Mauresmo wins WTA Championships in LA
Before the final even started France was sure of it's first ever Championship title holder as Amelie Mauresmo and Mary Pierce were to battle it out for the honour, the Billie Jean King vase and the one million dollar first prize.

26-year-old Mauresmo secured the biggest title of her career, coming from a set down to eventually overpower Mary Pierce 5-7 7-6 (3) 6-4 after a three-hour plus marathon. This win will see Amelie Mauresmo climb to third place in the world rankings and Mary Pierce to fifth.

Both girls could have won as the match swung to and fro in one of the best ever women's tennis matches but in the end the beauty and fluidity of Mary Pierce was overcome by the sheer power of Amelie Mauresmo. Mauresmo has put to bed the old tale that she hasn't the temperament to win while Pierce has added another place in a final to her tally for the season.
