Before
the final even started France was sure of it's first ever Championship
title holder as Amelie Mauresmo and Mary Pierce were to battle it out
for the honour, the Billie Jean King vase and the one million dollar
first prize.
26-year-old Mauresmo
secured the biggest title of her career, coming from a set down to
eventually overpower Mary Pierce 5-7 7-6 (3) 6-4 after a three-hour
plus marathon. This win will see Amelie Mauresmo climb to third place
in the world rankings and Mary Pierce to fifth.
