Riots continue in France
RitosinFranceOn Friday night, the 9th night of unrest, almost 900 cars were burnt and over 250 people arrested in the continuing riots that are now spreading into other areas of France.

The violence, which started on 27th October after two young immigrants where electrocuted in a relay station after allegedly running from police in the northern-Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois, has now spread to Marseille, Dijon, Rouen, Rennes, Toulouse, Lille and Nice. The death of the youths, Bouna Traore, 15, and Zyed Benna, 17 is now being investigated.

Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy is said to have aggravated the situation, calling the rioters "scum" and claiming that he would clean up crime in these poor areas with a "power hose".

The young rioters, mainly of Arab and African origin, live in deprived suburbs where unemployment is as high as 30%. These zones are being targeted in a new plan by Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who met with youths from some of the suburbs on Friday and also with eight ministers and a Muslim official on Saturday in a bid to put a stop to the problems.
