Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows boosts Amazon sales

The sales figures of the latest Harry Potter book - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - helped boost the income of online retail company Amazon.

Amazon said their profits in the three months leading up to 30 September had quadrupled to as much as $80m (£39m).

AmazonHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which was the final volume in the series by JK Rowling, had already become the fastest selling book ever when it was released on to the market in July.

But Amazon has claimed that it will nevertheless not make a profit on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows because it offered very large discounts and free shipping on the book.

Jeff Bezos, founder and chief executive of Amazon, explained the company’s policy on such matters and he said: "In our view, putting customers first is the only reliable way to create lasting value for shareowners."
