French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is on a three-day visit to Morocco, has initialled a deal for the French company Alstom to build a high-speed rail link between the cities of Tangiers and Marrakech.

The deal over the rail link is reported to be worth 2bn euros (£1.4bn), and Nicolas Sarkozy has also signed another deal to sell a French frigate to the Moroccan navy.

Nicolas SarkozyKing Mohammed VI welcomed Nicolas Sarkozy to Morocco, who was on his first visit to the country since being elected as president of France in May.

France mainly exports to Morocco and is the country’s main supplier of goods and foreign investment.

France will also now be selling a Fremm class frigate to the Moroccan navy and will be modernising 25 of its Puma helicopters as well as 140 armoured vehicles, however, Morocco chose not to buy 18 French Rafale fighters, but decided to buy cheaper jets from the US.

On Tuesday, Nicolas Sarkozy, who is accompanied by his Justice Minister, Rachida Dati, will be addressing the Moroccan parliament in Rabat, before moving on to Tangiers where he will outline his ideas for a union of the Mediterranean countries.
