Michelin - F1 - FIA tyre rule changes
Michelin, the formula one tyre manufacturers have said they are ‘perplexed' at the FIA's decision to allow tyre changes during Grands Prix in 2006. The French tyre makers, Michelin, claim the move is a backward step, which will substantially increase costs.

In 2005 each driver was allowed four sets of dry-weather tyres per event, with one set having to be selected for both qualifying and the race. In f1 in 2006, this will be increased to seven sets per event, with drivers again being allowed to change tyres during a race.

Michelin says that these new rules will increase costs in development, production and logistics, they went on to say that the FIA decision reveals ‘a lack of technical understanding of the product and of what a tyre really is.'

Michelin explained that instead of having a tyre that was designed to last 350 kilometres in 2005; 2006 will require tyre manufacturers to design an entirely new generation of tyres, that will only need to last 100 kilometres therefore increasing costs.

Michelin even went as far as to suggest ‘hidden motivations' behind the FIA's 2006 regulation changes and suggested that some teams were opposed to these new proposals.

In a response to Michelin's statement, the FIA stated that the changes had ‘'the support of an overwhelming majority of the Formula One Commission members and that they been voted in unanimously under the normal democratic procedures.''
