French President Nicolas Sarkozy gets Bulgarian medal
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been given the Bulgarian Stara Planina medal, which is said to be the highest honour awarded in the country.

Bulgarian President Georgy Parvanov presented Nicolas Sarkozy with the medal during a visit to Sofia and it was awarded for his role in the July release of six Bulgarian medics who were prisoners in Libya.

The Bulgarian medics had received the death sentence for infecting Libyan children with HIV, and they had spent nearly nine years in a Libyan jail, although they maintained their innocence until their release came.

The matter had been made more controversial because the day after the release of the Bulgarian medics, President Sarkozy had travelled to Tripoli to sign major trade agreements with the Libyan government.
