French sculptor - Arman dies in New York
ArmansWorkThe French-born sculptor - Armand Pierre Fernandez, known as Arman died in New York last Sunday aged 76. His death was a consequence of a long-lasting fight with cancer.

Arman was known to be one of the leading figures of the New Realism movement, which he helped to found together with sculptor Yves Klein in the early 1960's. His sculptures have been exhibited in some of the best-known museums in the world. He was famous for turning everyday objects into sculpture. In his works he used items such as burned objects, cans or other pieces of garbage as well as some damaged things.

The whole art society is deeply moved by his death and condolences from all over the world are pouring in to his family in New York. French President, Jacques Chirac was of course among them, presenting his sadness by stating the words: ‘This is a very large figure in contemporary art who has left us'.

His funeral will be held on Thursday in New York and a ceremony will also take place in Paris the same day.
