Britney Spears is alleged to have hit a parked car and then to have driven away from a Los Angeles car park on 6 August.
Britney Spears, who has just received a lot of bad press for her recent MTV Video Music Awards flop of a performance, could face six months in jail and a $1,000 (£495) fine if convicted.
The owner of the car filed an accident report, however, the city attorney's office in charge of the case did not know whether Britney Spears' car had been damaged in the incident.
Britney Spears was notified of the charges she faces by letter earlier this week and a hearing, which she does not have to attend because the charges are classed as misdemeanours, has been scheduled for 10 October.
