New radiation absorbing mineral found by Russian scientists
A new mineral has been discovered by a team of Russian scientists in the Khibiny Mountains in the Kolsky Poluostrov Peninsula of the Arctic Circle, and it is a very important find indeed, because the mineral actually has the property of being able to absorb radiation from liquid nuclear waste.

The Kolsky Poluostrov Peninsula is also known as the Kola Peninsula, and because the last ice age removed the top sediment layer of the soil there, on the surface the area is extremely rich in various ores and minerals, including apatites, alumina sources, iron ore, mica, titanium ore, phlogopite and vermiculite.

New mineral discovered on ArcticAs many as ten new minerals are found every year in the Arctic Circle and one third of discoveries worldwide of previously unknown minerals are made on the Kola Peninsula, however, the scientists haven’t given the new substance a name yet and it is currently simply known as number 27-4.

Yakov Pakhomovsky, the head of the Kolsky Research Institute explained: "It can extract radioactive substances from any water-based solution and so has a very important practical significance."

Radioactive water becomes completely safe after it is exposed to this remarkable mineral, however, there is one big problem because the Russian scientists say that tons of the mineral would be needed and they have only discovered a very small amount so far.

Fortunately, the scientists feel sure that once they have analysed it and know its properties that they will be able to create all they need, and Grigory Ivanyuk, from the Kolsky Research Institute is reported to have said: "We need to learn its properties and so that chemists can reproduce it on an unlimited scale."
