HFEA must rule on hybrid human-animal embryo plans
Regulators from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) will be making their decision as to whether human-animal embryos should be allowed to be created and used for research purposes.

The HFEA is thought to be likely to approve the controversial proposal, although with the proviso that each case should be judged on its individual merits.

Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA)Consultations have suggested that the public were "at ease" with the idea if they have it explained that the embryos could aid research on remedies for serious conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, but other people might view the plan as another example of “Frankenstein science” and be horrified by it being allowed.

Scientists say they hope to create hybrid embryos by combining human cells with animal eggs with the aim of extracting stem cells, which they claim are essential for research.

Scientific teams from Kings College London and Newcastle University have already sent in applications to the HFEA to be able to create and use human-animal hybrid embryos.
