Veteran R&B singer and guitarist Bo Diddley is described as in a stable condition in an American hospital following a heart attack.

Bo Diddley, 78, had complained of dizziness and sickness at a medical check-up on Friday, and was taken to the North Florida Regional Medical Center, in Gainesville, where he had a stent fitted to improve the blood flow to his heart.

R&B singer Bo DiddleyBo Didley’s publicist Susan Clary said his situation was "very serious" at the time he was hospitalised.

Susan Clary said Bo Diddley was now in stable condition at the hospital's cardiac care unit after being in intensive care over the past weekend.

Bo Diddley’s health has suffered over recent years and in May he received more hospital care after suffering a stroke and in past years he also lost several toes due to diabetes.

Bo Diddley received a lifetime achievement Grammy award in 1998 and earlier on in his career he scored hits with Who Do You Love, Before You Accuse Me, Mona and I'm a Man.

Bo Diddley has been an icon in the rock ‘n’ roll and R&B genres of music since he topped the charts with Bo Diddley way back in 1955.
