French actress Fanny Ardant sued for Red Brigades remark
The son of an Italian policeman killed by the extremist Red Brigades group in the 1970s is suing French actress Fanny Ardant, following her comment in Italian magazine that she regards Renato Curcio the imprisoned founder of the Red Brigades as her "hero".

Although Fanny Ardant has since apologised, Piero Mazzola, who is the son of the police officer who was killed, is not satisfied with this, and in Italy it is actually against the law to praise someone who has been convicted of committing a crime.

Fanny ArdantFanny Ardant had said she was an admirer of Renato Curcio because he had never abandoned his leftist ideals, but after seeing all the upset this had caused she apologised by saying: "My words have caused suffering to those who have suffered and for that I ask for forgiveness."

However, Piero Mazzola resonded to her apology by saying: "Curcio was convicted for killing my father, among other crimes. So, together with my family, I have filed legal proceedings against Ardant because she is praising a murderer."

Fanny Ardant was scheduled to be a guest at this week's Venice Film Festival but now the president of Italy's Veneto region, Giancarlo Galan, has asked her not to come in the wake of the anger she has sparked off by her remarks.
